To be alive is to be aware. It is to see, to feel, to touch; in short it is to experience. Life is short. A serious problem that society faces is our inability to appreciate what we have. Describing our days we choose to say what went wrong, instead of what went right. The news has on the crime and tragedy rather than the good. Complaints are cheap and abundant.
Growing up in Atlantic Beach, Florida, I was lucky to grow up in a community filled with natural beauty; Atlantic beach, Dutton Island, Guana state park. Each I have enjoyed while growing up, whether it be by taking walks on the beach, kayaking through marshlands, or relaxing in my hammock between two palm trees. Life is meant to be cherished. A perfect way to cherish life is to relax. Stress kills. In fact according to the World Health Organization “7 people die from stress every 2 seconds”. As technology continues to increase the speed of information, so will the pace of which we live our lives, meaning that stress related illness may only get worse.
BRIEF HISTORY OF HAMMOCKS
Fortunately, hammocks were invented. According to the Mayans, who invented the hammock nearly 1000 years ago, it was a ‘gift sent from the gods’. It was a means of survival for this ancient civilization; it was used to protect their people from the dangers of the ground while they slept; snakes, spiders, and other insects. It is recorded that when Columbus encountered the Taino people of the Bahamas, hammocks were the overwhelmingly way to sleep. These colonists often preferred the hammock to their stationary beds because of its swinging motion and hygienical benefits. To these people hammocks were extremely important to life; their life depended on being protected while they slept. Today hammocks can be of equal of necessity; there are huge amounts of the population who cannot get adequate sleep, whom are feeling the pressure of modern life, and who are suffering through chronic back pains. For this segment of the population, hammocks can be the solution!
HAMMOCKS THE PATH TO BETTER SLEEP
A part of life is sleeping. Humans spend nearly a third of their life sleeping. Countless studies show that the quality of your sleep is directly correlated to your overall happiness and success on your life. Sleep is where the body repairs itself. Where memories are formed. How humans recover from illness. Without proper sleep humans cannot function. Therefore it is imperative that we do get adequate sleep. Currently thousands of people around the world are suffering from insomnia. Insomnia is a condition that prevents people from falling asleep, or makes to where the body gets minimal amount of time to sleep before it wakes itself up. The abundance of technology that emits blue-light is also adding to the sleep crisis that we face today. This is a serious issue.
Thankfully we have hammocks. According to a study conducted by Federai University of Praui, Parnnaibu, Brazil “The hammock is commonly used in tropical areas as Brazil and provides a frequency of .25hz when in a swinging motion, which accelerates sleep onset”
This swinging motion is similar to that of a mother cradling her baby to sleep; the motion causes a synchronization of brain waves according to the study done by the Federai University. Meaning people suffering from Insomnia can be helped by sleeping in a hammock. To those who continue to suffer such a revelation may be a life-alternating experience. Sleep is vital to having a happy life. The productivity that society is missing out on from not getting enough sleep is mind-boggling. According to a findings from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine “23% of Americans struggle with insomnia, and it’s costing the US economy $63 billion annually.”
The ancient civilization of the Mayans was one of the greatest in human history, creating some of the grandest structures known to man. They also primarily slept in hammocks. Is sleeping in hammocks the secret to ultimate success? It just might be.

Life is full of experience that lift the spirit of man into fully appreciation of living. However pain can blind us to life’s beauty. Millions of people are tortured by chronic back pain. Dr. Steven Park, a member of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, is quoted as saying that the ideal sleeping posture is “lying on one’s back, with the head slightly elevated, about 10 – 30 percent.” This 10 to 30 percent position also happens to be the angle your body is lying when it is in a hammock. Better sleeping posture may be the key to having a healthier back, and as a result a healthier pain free life.
