Hi my name is Peter and I’m a hammock that spends most of my time strung across two big beautiful cherry blossoms at the University of California. Now that we are approaching the warmer weather my life is about to get really exciting. I spent months held up in the shed way across campus and I was very lonely without all the kids around me now. Now I am free. Yesterday was the first nice warm day of the spring. Loads of kids were all over the quad. A kid quickly approached me. He had his backpack with him which seemed to have a ton of books in it. He must be getting ready to study for finals. He shrugs off his backpack and lays back on me letting outs big sigh. I like that I am a place for students to relax when they are stressed. I know that college can be really stressful and sometimes a power nap on a me is the best cure. After a thirty minute nap the boy unzips his backpack and opens up his computer to type a paper. He doesn’t seem to be struggling. I like to think that being outside and relaxed on me with the sun shinning down and the birds chirping gives kids brainpower. After about two hours he gets up. Goodbye to my first customer of the day!! Come back soon! I’m empty for a while. I start to get upset that no one wants to come sit on me. Then a girl comes along. She seems to be crying. I wish I could talk so I could comfort her. I hear her on the phone with her mom. Her boyfriend just broke up with her. She lies back on me still sobbing. She hangs up with her mom and continues to sob. My heart is breaking for this poor girl. Before long the sobbing stops. I realize she has fallen asleep. Good. Sleep always cures a heartbreak. It starts to get a little windy and I swing in the wind. I look around. The University of California is such a beautiful place for a hammock to be. The weather at this time of the year is so perfect and gives me a chance to have tons of different kids come lay on me. Eventually the girl wakes up. She spends some time texting and then gets up to leave. Maybe she will get back together with her boyfriend and they will both come to visit me. The sky begins to get cloudy. Oh no, I hate when it rains because then no one comes to visit me. I keep my fingers crossed that at least someone else will come to visit me before it starts to rain. Twenty minutes later, my wishes come true! A boy and girl holding hands stroll over to me. They look so in love! They are giggling as they walk over to me. He holds me open for her to sit first and then he climbs in next to her. They just lay next to each other talking and taking in the beautiful scenery. I really hope it doesn’t start to rain. I love when couples come to sit on me because I love seeing young love. Of course just my luck it starts to rain. The couple frantically shoots up and starts to run off. I see him hand her his sweatshirt as they are running away. The rain always makes me upset because it means that I won’t have any visitors until I dry up. Hopefully that will be soon.
Being a hammock is so rewarding. Each day I get to have the job of making someone’s day better, less stressful, or just giving them a break from reality. Besides helping people emotionally I have many other benefits. For starters I am outside so that I am helping people to get outside and walk which is physical activity. I also help with blood circulation because I elevate the upper body and allow the blood to flow to the head. Want to hear something else really neat? As a hammock I provide no pressure points to the body because I am completely suspended in the air so I allow for a better sleep! So basically, even if it’s the middle of the day and you know you shouldn’t be sleeping, it’s okay to come sleep on me because it’s a health benefit! The easy swaying of me triggers the prefrontal cortex of your brain which, then in turn helps to improve focus. Don’t forget about all my practical benefits too! You can pitch me anywhere, which makes getting outdoors and traveling really easy! I’m also not that big or heavy so you can transport me anywhere and I’m a space saver! I know I’m a little bias because I am a hammock but seriously people 10/10 I would recommend you going to the store right now, buying a hammock, and setting it up outside! You can thank me later.
No matter where or how you use a hammock the benefits are undeniable. Get one that’s your favorite color and set it up outside! Being outside is the cure for everything especially when you have a hammock to relax in!
It’s finally winter here at the University of California and time for me to be put away again. It was an amazing spring, summer, and fall season outside with lots of people stopping by to take a seat on me. I feel extremely lucky to be a hammock and that so many people pass through my doors everyday. I get the privilege to hear so many different life stories and try to make so many people happy. I can’t wait for it to be spring again so I can be taken out of storage and continue my duty as a hammock. I can’t wait for the beautiful cherry blossoms. I can’t wait for the campus to be jumping with kids sitting outside. Until spring the University of California.
